Supporting community-led regeneration in Tolworth and

surrounding areas with creativity, imagination and your ideas

SHEDx is a two year project supported by the Greater London Authority and the The Heritage Lottery Fund designed to stimulate communities in Tolworth, and surrounding areas, to become engaged in re-imagining space, both urban and green, through interventions and creative opportunities.

SHEDx is an opportunity to deliver community-led regeneration amidst larger scale transformation as the area prepares to undergo major changes in the coming years.  The project takes it's inspiration from TEDx and the humble British allotment shed, in a programme where communities and individuals gather to share ideas and skills, sparking initiatives that will have a wider benefit for their local area.

Read about Grow For Good - our National Lottery Heritage Funded project which explored the rich heritage of growing in Tolworth and Surbiton.

Please get in touch at if you would like any further information about the project, or are interested in volunteering with us.

The project is designed to be flexible and responsive to the ideas that come from the community themselves and will continue to morph, shift and develop as the project progresses.  The elements of the project will include:

The Sheds

Three sheds will be designed and built by students from the Kingston Universities MA Architecture course  that will tour Tolworth.  These are:

The Heritage Shed

Funded by HLF this shed is a recreation of a beautiful shed found on the site of our allotment and Suburban Farm.  The shed has already toured to the V&A, The Hampton Court Flower Show (Silver medal winner!) and The Garden Museum at Lambeth Palace.  It features a visual and oral history exhibition on the history of allotments and land use in the area as well as insights into the present day.

The Green Shed

The Green Shed is comprised four separate 'seed pods' that are pulled by bicycle that come together into the Green Shed.  They will transport ideas, materials and information on planting, greening urban areas and gather bio diversity information as they travel.

The Ideas Shed

This Shed will be designed to use play to help people imagine what the area can offer and enable low risk business model testing.

The Mobile Stage

A portable trailer stage will tour the area with a programme of community events throughout the year celebrating some of the creative outputs from the project and promoting a celebration of local talent including music events, food festivals, pop up events and night time uses.

A Space on Tolworth Broadway

The project will bring back into use an empty premises on the Broadway creating a skills hub and harnessing opportunities to encourage new business and social enterprise start-ups.

Tolworth Station

A huge programme of activity is planned to bring back the station to its former glory and introducing new and vibrant ideas into the spaces at the station.  Work will be undertaken by Kingston University Graphics and Architecture students to re-animate the station including the currently boarded up waiting rooms, green spaces surrounding the station and on the platforms, carpark and staircases.

Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity Audit

Working with Kingston Environment Centre to provide baseline data by mapping green assets and and identify opportunities to build on these. This will be aligned to encourage walking and cycling by greening routes, and rediscovering the ancient ‘bee lines’ to
better support pollinator health. SHEDx will also provide a platform upon which we can raise awareness of how measures residents can take in their own lives can build local resilience towards to the impacts of surface water flooding, air pollution and biodiversity
